Personal Projects

During my time at University, I undertook a variety of independent projects outside of production show roles. I learnt different construction and scenic techniques. This expanded my knowledge and encouraged me to work independently.

Mask Making

Using worbla, I created a mask inspired by the 'Phantom of the Opera' masquerade. I first took a face cast of my own face, and then made this custom mask to perfectly fit the mould. I used layers of worbla, adding a trim and petal leaves whilst using a rich colour palette to create a regal look.

Event dressing - Foyer

This project demonstrated dressing skills used in the events industry. We decorated the theatre foyer corridor using inspiration from the costumes of Cinderella's ugly step-sisters. I learnt how to pleat and ruche fabric to create panelling using staples and tag guns, as well as selecting appropriate props to dress the space to align with the theme.

'The Raven' Installation

Alongside a team, we created an installation based on the poem 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe. My responsibility was to design masking flats which created the path of the installation. To make this project more sustainable, I reused flats and paint from previous shows. I also chalked 'Nevermore', a word repeated throughout the poem, frantically across the flats to reflect the decline of the speaker's mental state.

Polystyrene carving

During this project, I learnt the process of research, designing and realising a project independently.

My carving was inspired by Aslan the lion from 'The Chronicles of Narnia'. I used a variety of mediums: polystyrene, idenden, rope and water-based paint to create a stone effect.
