How I Got Here (Spoiler: It Wasn’t Straightforward)
With musician parents, I never pictured myself in theatre. At ten, I thought concerts, opera, and theatre were pretty stupid—mostly because my parents were always out in the evenings. I was convinced I’d be a vet. At fifteen, I discovered musicals—and suddenly, my parents’ jobs seemed pretty unique, at least compared to my friends’ parents. Still, I was going to be ... a lawyer.
Fast forward to age twenty-two: I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in primary school teaching—proof that planning your life rarely works out. My first post-grad job, however, was a placement at a regional theatre in Germany. That led to my first role as an assistant director for an opera, and despite not being a huge opera fan (I’ll take a musical any day!), I ended up spending four years working on Wagner’s Ring Cycle and other operas and operettas—plus one musical!
In 2019, I called my first production, and was immediately hooked. While I enjoyed being an assistant director, I wasn’t interested in directing myself. But show calling? That I could see myself doing long-term.
Through a mix of luck, patience, and perseverance, I landed a dream role as a show caller at both venues of Vereinigte Bühnen Wien in 2023. It finally felt like I’d found the job I’d been searching for.
Watching the Production Stage Manager in action during rehearsals for The Phantom of the Opera reminded me of my assistant directing days (if also on a very different scale)—and that, combined with the adrenaline of show calling? That was what I wanted.
To build on my skills, I paused work to complete an MA in Stage and Production Management at the Guildford School of Acting in the UK. I dove into everything from Health & Safety and rigging to sound, LX, and communication systems, plus shadowed DSMs at London venues.
Now I’m heading back to Vienna with new tools, a fresh perspective, and excitement for whatever comes next!
