In my first official role at Guildford School of Acting, I was involved in a production where I had the chance to explore a wide range of skills. From sourcing obscure props to crafting fake blood capsules, the show provided me with opportunities to tap into my creativity and problem-solving abilities under pressure.
As the Wardrobe Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) on this dynamic production, I delved into the realm of wardrobe. Working closely with our designer, Tara Usher, and wardrobe supervisor, Sheree Paton, I played a key role in selecting the perfect garments for each cast member, ensuring that their individual personalities shone through while maintaining the cohesive look of the football team. Additionally, I provided support dressing for swift costume changes and ensuring the upkeep of costumes throughout the shows.
In this role, I excelled as an ASM, especially in prop-making. When our puppet hire fell through for our period piece, I took on the challenge of crafting two life-size puppets from scratch, which was a success. This project allowed me to showcase my creative problem-solving skills and adaptability, ultimately contributing to the success of the production.
Assistant stage managing this production was unlike any experience I had encountered before, as it was remarkably relaxed. Our director, Dan Hill, and designer, Richard Cooper, were instrumental in ensuring a smooth rehearsal process. Managing live ivy on the set added an intriguing challenge, especially with the heat from stage lights!
This experience underscored the significance of quick thinking and the imperative of multitasking within the scope of large-scale productions. Handling intricate props like the operational rickshaw amidst tight transition schedules made this a high-intensity show. As one of the three ASMs, I was consistently engaged in various tasks, from rapid costume changes to swiftly catching chairs hurtling offstage. This demanding environment honed my ability to perform under pressure and reinforced the importance of seamless coordination in delivering successful performances.
As the Stage Manager, I had the opportunity to integrate all the skills I acquired during my tenure at GSA. I received commendable feedback for my adept management of the room throughout tech week. Clear and concise communication with various departments and creatives, honed through my experience in different show roles, facilitated a seamless creative process during rehearsals and a successful show week, which was warmly received.
